2008 Karting Sponsorship Offer...

Some people may already know this, but I have been competing in an amateur Karting Series for the 2007 season. And as some of you may know, I was quite successful.. I finished 5th overall in my division (out of 64), and 19th grand overall in the series (out of 328). Based on my successful performance, I was offered a Karting Sponsorship to compete in the ROTAX division for the 2008 season!! Now, you're probably thinking in your head - "Wow! That's awesome!!" - Yes, it is.. But not really.. Sponsorships are NEVER fully "free"..

I had to provide an initial deposit of about $7000 for a brand new Kart and 125cc Rotax engine.. As a sponsored driver, I get discounted parts and use of their tools and knowledge on setups for various tracks/layouts etc.. I'm still responsible for my own equipment (which i already have) and the maintenance of the Kart and engine - Which also includes any parts that need to be replaced.. At the end of the season, they give back $1500 as part of the "sponsorship agreement"...

By reading that paragraph, you already know my answer whether or not I took it.... HELLLLL NOOOOOO!!!! LMAO!! First off, my "sponsor" is the factory distributor of the specific Kart. So I'm sure they already get it at a significant discount - So the $1500 that they agree to give back, is probably just a portion of the profit... Secondly, they're going to make money off of me by buying all these parts from them etc.. And lastly, come'on.. $7000? Do they think I shit money? I'm saving up for a down payment for a condo, soooo that in itself is out of the question...

It's nice to know that I've been considered though.. But I politely told them "no".. I will probably join the arrive and drive season still (like I did for 2007) next season though.. :)

A Tragic Passing... Please Pray For Her...

It's a sad day.. Tuesday evening news you hear about the regular things going on in this world.. You hear about a tragic car accident that took the life of someone.. The last thing that you'd ever want to hear is that it was someone you know.. Well it happened.. Here's the official story here -> http://www.citynews.ca/news/news_17363.aspx

Please read it before you continue...

She was a friend of mine.. We weren't extremely close, but we got along very, very well.. She was a former colleague of mine as well at work. She left the company in Feb 2007, however still kept in touch with a lot of us.. We'd get to meet up with each other once in a while when a bunch of us decide to get together for drinks or whatever... Last time I saw her was in June... She had invited me to her birthday party in November, just last month.. She JUST turned 26.. I unfortunately had to decline the invite as I had another party to go to.. I guess I should've gone to her birthday party.. Because she's not going to have another one.. Anymore.. Forever..

RIP Josie - You'll surely be missed.. She was a pretty, kind, hyper girl who had a heart of gold and would've had a HUGE future well ahead of her.

Canadian Karting Series Race #7 and #8 and #9

If you were observant, I skipped a number from my previous Karting Race post. I had missed one Karting race since I had gone to Atlanta on vacation for that time to visit my bro, sister-in-law, and newborn godson.. Didn't matter, Atlanta was much more fun :)

Race #7... Well what can I say? That day felt REALLY good. I clocked one of the fastest times of the TRACK. Wasn't sure if I broke a record.. But.. I'm sure I was close. In any case, with that said, I took pole position for qualifying ;) .. What's surprising though was a new face behind me who qualified second! It was a newcomer who had joined late in the season. But he obviously had previous experience somewhere (and weighs/looks really light) as I (and the third qualifier) had clocked really, really quick times!! Anyway, race is off!! I never expected it, but I got a LOT of pressure from the new guy. He was on my ass for the first couple laps AND peeking through in some turns with a possible attempt to overtake.. We were clocking times very close to our qualifying times dicing and protecting my position.. The new guy got me on one corner bumping me down to 2nd place; and so, I turned the tables and shifted the pressure to him instead.. I got him to crack - but to my disadvantage. I was tailing too close, pressured him enough to lock his brakes on a high speed hairpin and he went sideways, but because I was tailing too close - I had bumped him causing both of us to go into a spin!!! I was lucky enough to recover and rejoin the race at 5th place, but had to work hard to end up in a so-so 4th place position. Had there been more laps (2-3 more), I would've been able to catch 3rd and secured a podium finish... Unfortunately, not this race......

--

Anyway, Race #8 was pretty exciting! For one thing, organizers decided to have the reverse-track layout instead of the conventional layout we normally race.. And because of this, a lot of people needed to get used to the 'new' layout. Surprisingly, it's completely different from what you would've normally thought. The reverse track required less braking points, was (or at least felt) faster too. I felt really comfortable right away and tested the limits of each corner on every practice session. I clocked pretty quick times in comparison to others; and on qualifying thought had edged pole position once again. To our surprise, it was the newcomer from the last race who had taken pole! Amazing! LOL... In any case, race started off, and the 1-2-3 positions were all bunched up. New guy, me, then the jockey guy (remember him? lol).. We were pressuring each other every lap, but I was feeling nudges from behind me. I had no choice but to give up my place and fall back to third. We were all dicing for positions at this point and no one backed off. We were dicing with each other so much that the 4th place guy caught up to us and ALMOST dove in on me on the last lap... But I was able to hang on to a respectable third for a bronze medal podium finish... Believe me though, if you knew what happened the night before this race, it's amazing I did as well as I did... I only had 3 hours or so of sleep. Was wired on Vodka/Redbulls. I had more than four CANS of Redbull to top-up on my double-shot vodkas. And considering that Redbull has a warning not to mix it with alcohol AND some bars refuse to mix it for you for safety reasons, is good enough sign to use caution... LOL

And now... Just recently, Race #9... This happened during the American Le Mans Series Weekend (including Speed World Challenge, Star Mazda Series, Formula BMW, etc, etc) when they had visited our local track - Mosport.. I spent the entire day on Saturday walking, standing, and watching. You could just imagine how tired I was.. The following day (Sunday) was MY race day... I was clocking really crappy times during practice. Almost 4 seconds off the pace... LOL... But I just kept pushing myself and got quicker and quicker every session. By the time the track, the temperature, the engines had all warmed up - so was I... :) Qualifying session started. My out lap had ALREADY beat any of my practice times! I couldn't do much more but push even harder! And this wasn't just a fluke, they were getting consistent too! By the time qualifying ended, I found out that other people were clocking times close to a full second slower than me! So once again, I clinched pole position once more... Come race time... Was pretty straightforward - there were no position changes. I won FIRST place!!! :) It took me this long! Finally!!!

There's some more races to come! But the season is coming close to an end....

Damn Right It's SHARK WEEK! ! !

As dorky as it may be, it's Shark Week this week!! Started on July 29th until Aug 4th... And to commemorate this, Discovery Channel launched a 20th Anniversary Shark Week Collection!! It goes without saying that I HAD to get it...

As you can see, it's got a nice holographic cover for the box etc... This collection is pretty worth it. It has a lot of the essential Shark Week episodes notably the ones with the Great White Shark breaching water. Unfortunately it isn't an HD-DVD, but I tried it out on my bro's 'up-convert' dvd player, which is the next best thing, and holy crap do the videos look SUPER clear... Love it!

Canadian Karting Series Race #5 + Toronto Grand Prix

This is a long overdue post of this race...

In any case, there really wasn't much to report... It was just "another day at the office" type of race.. ;) LOL

Qualifying had gone really well - I had qualified POLE. If I can recall correctly, just edged pole by 0.05 of a second.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to hang on my position the entire race. Probably the 3rd to the last lap, I had lost my place and fell to 2nd - which is where I had finished. It really isn't as easy as it seems especially if the guy behind you is apparently faster than you (I admit it!). Also, I've always had a bad habit of looking back to check MORE than normal. Obviously you can't drive faster looking backwards... Sooo.. Go figure.. At least I was able to hold him off for a bit before cracking under pressure... LOL

Also went to the Toronto Grand Prix Weekend. Great action packed races/series! Had CHAMP Car, Formula Atlantic Series, Star Mazda Series, Speed World Challenge, and the local Ontario GT Series. The race day (Sunday) had called for great weather and only a 5% chance of rain. Guess what? It poured sporadically the WHOLE DAY. It got so many race teams confused on what setups to use etc. Being a city track, with low traction, incidents were bound to happen...

Check out my pictures in my multiply page!

Gold access tickets and paddock access were all courtesy of MAZDA USA. :) A major sponsor of each series that ran. Of course, it pays to have extremely nice contacts through the Mazda6club (and Cleveland6Club) to help me get the tickets.

Canadian Karting Series Race #3 and #4

I've been pretty busy lately and haven't been able to update my blog about this... I also was kind of pissed as well on how these races went. So in any case, here's what happened...

RACE #3

My races are on Sunday mornings. Soooo... Here's how my weekend went. I worked Friday. Right after work, went drinking the WHOLE night. Mind you, I sometimes work Saturdays too. It just so happened I worked on Saturday for that week. And it's not just a normal work day, I have to be AT WORK by 7am. Which meant I had to wake up at 5:30am to get ready and get to work... So as you can imagine how brutal that was for me after drinking and going out, and going home just in time for about 3 hours sleep. Great. Day goes by, I'm at work on Saturday freakin morning still pepping with energy.. My buddy Cesar (Cho) calls me, and wants to play golf... LOL.. Right after work at 5pm (Yes, that's right.. 7am - 5pm - that's 10 hours), I go straight to the golf course to meet up with Cesar... Couple hours pass by, we do a good round of golf - We decide to go try out the "Ripstick" (2 wheel skateboard).. Couple hours pass by, we take a couple videos of ourselves carving the parking lot etc etc... It's 9pm by that time... I head on home dead tired.. BUT wait, I just remembered, that I had a birthday party to go to!! I get home around 10.. Take a quick shower and get ready - Leave my place by 10:45pm and WALK (2ish kms) to the club/lounge where I was to meet up with some people (and the Bday girl). Once again, partied all night - getting home at 3am-ish and get to bed to wake up for 6:30am to get ready for my race...

So as you can see the extensive preparation I had for my Sunday race :)

Chugged down a Redbull - and was still yawning after every 5mins. Whatever.. Sooooooo I got through the day qualifying in 4th and finishing the race as well in 4th place... I can't argue with that, it was my fault so whatever.. "Work hard, Party harder" right? ;)

RACE #4

This time, I actually prepared myself... But lady luck just wasn't on my side that day... I felt pretty confident in my practice sessions! Qualifying came, my Kart felt very, very solid and was pretty quick on the straights too! The RPMs just kept climbing! I'm pretty sure I would've qualified pole or second... But where did I end up qualifying? LAST F*CKING PLACE!!! Why? Because my freakin' transponder wasn't working and was not reporting the time to my ALFANO lap timer....... Isn't it GREAT?

Well, what else is new? I was never lucky to begin with ever since before. I've started from the back of the pack before due to mechanical and stupid reasons. But the only difference was, was that we had 3 heats before (in Manila) instead of a single-heat sprint race that I have to deal with now...

Well, with my uber spectacular karting skilllzzzzzz LOL... I was able to CLAW my way back to 4th place (pack of 10) in about 7 laps.......

There's some "glory" to the finish considering the story behind it, especially since I was getting pretty close to the third place driver... But the bottomline is, 4th place is 4th place. I just missed the podium... Craptastic!

"...it doesn't matter if you win by and inch or a mile... Winning's winning!!" Hahahaha
